Alison's actions
Storage
Befriend My Freezer
I will freeze leftover food items or meals for later. The freezer is my food-waste-reduction friend!
Community
Keep all food waste out of the garbage
In addition to using up my edible food, I will keep any extra scraps out of the trash by separating them for backyard composting, curbside pickup, or a drop-off program.
Shopping
Eat Before Shopping
I will resist impulse buys by eating a snack or meal before going grocery shopping. Those who grocery shop on an empty stomach spend 64% more than not-hungry shoppers.

Source Local Foods
I will buy locally grown food from my grocery store and make 1 meal(s).

Make Soup Broth

When life gives me lemons (or other citrus peels), I will use the rinds to make a nontoxic cleaner.

Alison Cameron 8/20/2025 2:07 PMHaving a young child in the house can lead to a lot of food waste when his tastes change. Learning how to repurpose turning produce, like turning strawberries with soft spots into jam, has been a real game-changer.-

Alison Cameron 8/20/2025 2:04 PMI hosted my son's birthday party this day. I almost over-ordered for the number of guests that had RSVP'd and after a quick Google search, I right-sized my order. The weather didn't cooperate so we ended up with slightly fewer guests than originally planned for. I still saved money and food by reducing my order. -
Alison Cameron 8/19/2025 8:14 AMWe hosted a party for my son over the weekend and have been working on eating the leftover donuts for breakfast. -
Alison Cameron 8/19/2025 8:13 AMI performed a fridge clean out and was disappointed to have a few items go to waste, including mashed potatoes, with which I had planned to make potato pancakes or potato bread. I feel marginally better that the food waste can be composted, but I'm brainstorming techniques to avoid forgetting about leftovers. I welcome any ADHD-friendly tactics that result in kid-friendly recipes! -
Alison Cameron 8/11/2025 5:29 AMI was concerned about creating food waste while attending a conference and then attending a public meeting in the evening. The organizers were thoughtful at both events about offering reusable foodware, and I focused on taking only what I could eat. It's easy to load up a plate at a buffet, so slowing down to be mindful of my portions and my hunger level helped me avoid overeating and be sure I didn't end up with a plate I'd need to scrape at the end.-
