Properly Store Leafy Greens
I will roll unwashed lettuce in a dry towel, then store it in a sealed bag in the refrigerator. I will properly store 1 bunches of leafy greens.

Support Imperfection
I will intentionally buy ugly produce at the grocery store, farmers market, or sign up for an ugly produce CSA box.
Shopping
Buy Loose Produce and Shop the Bulk Bins
I will buy loose produce with a reusable bag or food from the bulk section to get the exact quantity I need.
Shopping
Stick to Your Grocery List
I will only purchase the items on my grocery list and avoid impulse purchases.
Shopping
Skip the Cart
Bigger carts make us feel like we need to fill them! Use a hand basket to improve grocery store discipline and prevent over-purchasing.

REFLECTION QUESTIONShoppingWhat are some of the things you typically buy that you weren't on your list? How do you think you might limit some of those purchases?
Gabriela Cimadevilla 8/25/2025 2:59 PMSnacks! Which serves as a distraction from the food that is more quickly perishable and could properly satiate me. By sticking to my grocery list, I am omitting buying unnecessary snacks that I will indulge in before prioritizing the items that need to be eaten first. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONShoppingHow has buying bulk impacted the amount of food you waste?
Gabriela Cimadevilla 8/25/2025 2:56 PMI have wasted significantly less food because I am more aware of the quantity of food I have. If I buy potatoes bagged in plastic, it's an arbitrary amount I am buying, immediately creating a disconnect with my food. Whereas if I buy 3 loose potatoes, then I know exactly how much I have and need to use. Buying in bulk gives more agency to the consumer. At first, it is less convenient. But it eventually becomes more convenient because it allows the consumer to think more freely about their food choices and have more control. As opposed to being obligated to buying a large supply of ingredients they don't need and will not use.
Moreover, one of the surprising parts about consistently buying in bulk is that it makes ingredients more visible. Because food items aren't pre-packaged, it doesn't enforce the same out of sight, out of mind experience consumers have with food as a result of food packaging. The visible barrier is eliminated. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONShoppingWould you be more willing to buy produce with a few imperfections at your grocery store? Why or why not?
Gabriela Cimadevilla 8/18/2025 3:23 PMYes, cosmetic imperfections do not impact the quality of the produce.-
Ash Kephart 8/18/2025 7:05 PMSo true! A couple of times when I've cut open a perfect looking one on the outside, I discovered rotten stuff on the inside. Yuck!

Gabriela Cimadevilla 8/01/2025 11:25 AMWe don't always find what we are looking for when shopping for groceries. Anecdotally, because I mainly shop at the local farmers market, the availability of certain items varies. While I know what I want to purchase, it may not always be available. Just like you would select a "back-up" option if you were purchasing groceries through Instacart or some other grocery delivery platform, it's a good idea to have an idea of substitutions when grocery shopping IRL. This way, we don't completely have to pivot when the item we're shopping for is out of stock or unavailable. Keeping us on track to continue managing our grocery purchases with confidence! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONShoppingReflecting on how your grocery trips have gone in the past: do you fill up your cart? Do you think you can fit everything you need into a smaller cart or a basket?
Gabriela Cimadevilla 8/01/2025 11:18 AMI notice that when I get a cart, I am that much more tempted to fill it with items I don't necessarily need. Whereas when I get a basket, I find myself putting things back that I don't need when it gets too full. It's an easy way to visually remind myself that I don't need to spend more money on items that I don't need. Also, no one likes carrying around a heavy basket!! -
Gabriela Cimadevilla 7/30/2025 10:32 AMHi everyone, my name is Gaby. Encouraging and incentivizing people to reduce, reuse, and recycle is my job. Despite this, I still occasionally accrue moldy, forgotten food in my fridge. Striving to be more accountable, I figured the Stop Food Waste Challenge would be the perfect opportunity to join a community of others that are on the same food waste prevention journey. Happy to be here and looking forward to engaging with other participants in this challenge!
