Planning
Keep a Food Inventory
I will take a fridge and pantry inventory to stay up to date with what I have at home before I go grocery shopping.
Planning
Create a Weekly Meal Plan
I will reduce food waste and save money by planning a weekly menu of meals and ingredients for my household of 2.
Planning
Make Time for Meal Prep
I will set aside time to prepare meals in advance.
Storage
Properly Store Berries
To keep berries fresh, place them on top of a paper towel in a sealed container to absorb excess moisture and reduce chances of molding. I will properly store 2 packs of berries.
Storage
Properly Store Leafy Greens
I will roll unwashed lettuce in a dry towel, then store it in a sealed bag in the refrigerator. I will properly store 1 bunches of leafy greens.
Cooking
Save the Peels
When life gives me lemons (or other citrus peels), I will use the rinds to make a nontoxic cleaner.

Nina Curvis 8/08/2025 4:00 AMI made some vegetarian Shepard's Pie that uses lentils instead of ground beef, and sweet potato instead of regular potato. It's so good right out of the oven but it is AMAZING 1-2 days later.
The recipe looks complicated because of all of the ingredients, but I've used it as a base recipe and I swap in different items when I need to, so I find it a useful recipe for using up food that I don't want to go to waste!

Nina Curvis 8/06/2025 9:58 PMWe use dry erase marker for keeping track of what's in the fridge:-
Emily Pollack 8/07/2025 6:11 PMWe attached a large dry erase board on side of our fridge to keep track. We just compete with the children who find it funny to erase things. Our lists are: Eat, Snack, Make, Buy -
Nina Curvis 8/07/2025 7:22 AM@Benjamin Ensz: it can leave a residue over time, sort of depends on the fridge, honestly. So I wash the fridge off every now and then. We do this on our deep freezer as well so we don't find freezer burned meat or leftovers at the bottom two years later! -
Benjamin Ensz 8/07/2025 6:55 AMThat's so smart! Does it leave any kind of residue/staining over time? We constantly forget what's in the fridge if it's not within eyesight, so I'd love to make this a habit!

Nina Curvis 8/06/2025 12:25 PMI'm a dietitian, so I know a out meal prep and strategies to avoid food waste, but I'm not always the best at practicing it. Excited for this challenge to get into better food saving habits! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPlanningDo you have days when you don't have time to spend making food? How has meal prep helped one those days?
Nina Curvis 8/06/2025 12:20 PMWe made a plan and got delayed by a day but got back on track to prep for meals this week! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPlanningAre there food items you have been better about using up and not wasting since you started keeping an inventory of what's in your fridge?
Nina Curvis 8/01/2025 7:13 PMWe keep an inventory of our produce and leftovers written in dry erase marker on our fridge doors. Helps reduce time looking in the fridge with the doors open!-
