Ash's actions
Cooking
Cook From Snout to Tail
I will try a recipe that utilizes parts of an animal that are typically wasted (skin, bones, organs, etc.).
Planning
Keep a Food Inventory
I will take a fridge and pantry inventory to stay up to date with what I have at home before I go grocery shopping.
Planning
Create a Household Cookbook
I will create a cookbook or recipe collection of go-to meals for my household to make meal planning easier.
Planning
Plan to Use My Garden or CSA Produce
I will check to see what will be ready to eat in my garden or CSA box this week and plan recipes that use these ingredients.
Planning
Plant a Garden
I will plant an herb or vegetable garden at my home or community garden.
Planning
Learn About Portion Sizes
I will observe how much my family members eat and learn how many portions will match our life stages and appetites.
Cooking
Save the Peels
When life gives me lemons (or other citrus peels), I will use the rinds to make a nontoxic cleaner.
Kids
Visit a Farm
I will visit a local pizza farm, teaching farm, or CSA grower to educate myself and my children on farm-to-table concepts.
Shopping
Skip the Cart
Bigger carts make us feel like we need to fill them! Use a hand basket to improve grocery store discipline and prevent over-purchasing.
Kids
Get Involved in the Kitchen
I will involve my 2 children in meal planning, prepping and cooking activities.

Vivien Fowler 8/24/2025 9:16 AMEggshells can be put to a lot of good use besides just fertilizer. You can use half of the shells for seed starters, pest control where you sprinkle crushed shells around plants to deter slugs, snails, and some soft-bodied insects, and crafts & decoration, i.e., mosaic art, ornaments or textured paint filler. -
Sharon Kephart 8/24/2025 9:14 AMI knew eggs were full of calcium, just didn't know how to extract it. Thanks for the idea.

Vivien Fowler 8/23/2025 3:20 PMBanana peels have lots of uses beyond fertilizer. 🍌It can be used as seed starter. For instance, you place small seedlings inside half a peel and plant the whole thing in soil; the peel decomposes and nourishes the plant at the same time. Banana peels are also safe to eat when cooked or blended. For instance, I use it to tenderize meat by wrapping meat with banana peels while cooking to keep it moist. You can also boil it and then blend it into smoothies, and so forth. -
