Sign up for Fridge Check Fridays

I will sign up for Fridge Check Friday emails, sent by Hennepin County but open to everyone, to prompt me to check my fridge for food that needs to be used up and for hacks on storing food to keep it fresh.

Letter to editor

I wrote a letter to editor of the MN Star Tribune advertising this event. It was published Aug 6.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Planning

Track My Wasted Food

I will track the food that my household of 1 throws out so I can learn what we're wasting and why.

Skip the Cart

Bigger carts make us feel like we need to fill them! Use a hand basket to improve grocery store discipline and prevent over-purchasing.

COMPLETED 3

Properly Store Berries

To keep berries fresh, place them on top of a paper towel in a sealed container to absorb excess moisture and reduce chances of molding. I will properly store 1 packs of berries.

Befriend My Freezer

I will freeze leftover food items or meals for later. The freezer is my food-waste-reduction friend!

I learned to look in my fridge, know what's there, plan to use the oldest "fresh" stuff first, to buy more consciously to avoid over-buying, to freeze what I can't get to, to re-use parts (rinds, juice, etc.) for other things... so much to think about~

This has been a great exercise for me to think more consciously about food. Thanks!!! I have been changing my ways, and I will continue to think about this, notice what I do, plan, etc. Very worthwhile exercise. I'm so glad I did it!

I realized today: I have totally changed my thinking about what to eat. Instead of "what do I feel like eating today?" -- I look in the fridge and say "what do I need to eat first; what will spoil if I don't get to it?" I think this is mission accomplished! Thanks for this challenge!!!!

Just installed the app Too Good to Go -- to get notices for food deals from restaurants and stores.

I looked around my neighborhood, but sold out -- I'll check earlier tomorrow. Apparently you can see it and tag it, then go pick it up later...

I have it downloaded but haven't used it. Let's try it out!

Taking advice here to chop up celery that is wilting -- freeze for soup of something later; also adding some peppers to it.

    Shopping
Reflecting on how your grocery trips have gone in the past: do you fill up your cart? Do you think you can fit everything you need into a smaller cart or a basket?

I have long taken the smallest cart, instead of the big one, for this reason. I fill it up.The small one makes me notice more...I also bring fewer bags in from the car, hoping I will stop when I think all bags will be filled.... this is a work in progress. Have not perfected it, but this exercise is making me double down.

I found three mushrooms beyond saving in the fridge. How /why are there three? I don't know. I'm bad! Never again, I read that I should store them in a paper bag I've always left them in the container from store. I know better now! Will transfer to bag and keep a watch.

Don’t be too hard on yourself -- three mushrooms is a small loss, and now you’ve learned a great storage tip! Paper bags really do help keep them fresher longer. 🌿You’re already on the right track by making the switch. 👍😊.

I'm remodeling my kitchen right now. So have a refrig, but no stove or sink. Challenging! But I am noticing how mostly I eat fresh vegs and saute on stovetop, then add other things. Can't do that now. I'm eating a lot of toast in the living room! I invented toast with hummus and kale, after tiring of peanut butter. Pesto and tomatoes. But, overall, this challenge is really making me think about what I waste and how I will kit out my new kitchen better!

That is so hard especially in the harvest season! Maybe a friend or neighbor has an electric skillet you could borrow to saute some veggies.

That sounds like quite the adventure -- your toast creations could start a whole new food trend! Glad the challenge is sparking ideas for your new kitchen setup.

What did you find you are tossing the most? How can you change your habits to avoid wasting this food?

Fruit! I try to buy less and eat it right away -- but sometimes gets away from me. Trying to notice and be better...
