Shopping
Eat Before Shopping
I will resist impulse buys by eating a snack or meal before going grocery shopping. Those who grocery shop on an empty stomach spend 64% more than not-hungry shoppers.
Planning
Sign up for Fridge Check Fridays
I will sign up for Fridge Check Friday emails, sent by Hennepin County but open to everyone, to prompt me to check my fridge for food that needs to be used up and for hacks on storing food to keep it fresh.
Cooking
Make Soup Broth
I will store vegetable scraps or bones in my freezer and use them to make veggie stock or bone broth. I will make 1 batches.
Community
Order Half-Portions or Share Meals
I will ask for half-portions options or share an entrée when eating out to minimize food waste.
Community
Keep all food waste out of the garbage
In addition to using up my edible food, I will keep any extra scraps out of the trash by separating them for backyard composting, curbside pickup, or a drop-off program.
Shopping
Stick to Your Grocery List
I will only purchase the items on my grocery list and avoid impulse purchases.
Planning
Create a Weekly Meal Plan
I will reduce food waste and save money by planning a weekly menu of meals and ingredients for my household of 2.
Cooking
Cook Just Enough
I will scale down the recipe of a meal to make just the right amount for my household of 2 so we eat everything up.

REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityDo you know if the restaurants you frequently visit offer smaller portions? Do you feel comfortable asking for them if not?
Sara Kuehn 8/22/2025 8:17 AMI have not asked for smaller portions, but I have asked for a to-go box right away. Then I put half my meal in the to-go box and have the rest the next day. I would be interested in if I still got charged the same amount for less food. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCookingWe often worry about running out of food so we make too much. What thoughts and feelings have come up when you make just the right amount to eat up all the food?
Sara Kuehn 8/22/2025 8:15 AMWhenever I purchase a lot of ingredients, they typically will go bad before I make the meals, especially fruit and veggies. Buying just what I need when I need it prevents food going to waste. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPlanningAn average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Does this surprise you? Where would you rather use this money? How has meal planning helped you avoid waste?
Sara Kuehn 8/22/2025 8:14 AMWe plan our meals now so that we will have enough for additional lunches or dinners which has led to less eating at restaurants and less food waste. We don't mind leftovers! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityHow has your awareness of the food you waste changed since you started separating it from other trash? Did anything surprise you?
Sara Kuehn 8/06/2025 12:40 PMWe now keep more uneaten veggies and bones/skin to make broth so we can have that for soups in the winter! I am really looking forward to that! -
Sara Kuehn 8/06/2025 12:34 PMWe made a meal plan for the week and then bought groceries that only were for what we plan to eat. We also stuck to our list when we shopped for the items. -
Sara Kuehn 8/05/2025 7:58 AMIt's slow but I am ramping up and have completed 1 task!-
