Janet's actions
Storage
Properly Store Leafy Greens
I will roll unwashed lettuce in a dry towel, then store it in a sealed bag in the refrigerator. I will properly store 1 bunches of leafy greens.
Cooking
Save the Peels
When life gives me lemons (or other citrus peels), I will use the rinds to make a nontoxic cleaner.
Storage
Organize My Refrigerator
I will organize my refrigerator to maximize shelf life based on the temperature and humidity of different spots.
Planning
Sign up for Fridge Check Fridays
I will sign up for Fridge Check Friday emails, sent by Hennepin County but open to everyone, to prompt me to check my fridge for food that needs to be used up and for hacks on storing food to keep it fresh.
Planning
Find your meal planning personality
I will explore different meal plan techniques and choose one that works for my household.
Storage
Properly Store Herbs
I will store fresh herbs just like cut flowers in a jar with 1 to 2 inches of water and cover with a plastic bag to maintain moisture. For woody or hardy herbs like rosemary, thyme, sage and chives, I will arrange them lengthwise on a damp paper towel, rolled up, then sealed in a plastic bag and stored in the refrigerator. I will properly store 3 bunches of herbs.
Planning
Track My Wasted Food
I will track the food that my household of 1 throws out so I can learn what we're wasting and why.
Shopping
Buy Loose Produce and Shop the Bulk Bins
I will buy loose produce with a reusable bag or food from the bulk section to get the exact quantity I need.

Janet Meger 8/31/2025 10:08 PMI have always tried to be mindful of not wasting food. I grew up in a family of eight with a tight budget, so I learned how to appreciate what we grew in our garden and later ate together. However, this challenge has helped me to renew my commitment to follow these practices more closely now. Thank you. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONShoppingHow has buying bulk impacted the amount of food you waste?
Janet Meger 8/31/2025 10:01 PMI usually buy a lot of produce in bulk rather than bags with the exception of berries, citrus fruit and apples. This month I have also bought rice, nuts, bay leaves and dried beans in bulk. I am still learning how to estimate how much I need to purchase at one time but am certain that the amount of food I waste will be less. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPlanningWhat did you find you are tossing the most? How can you change your habits to avoid wasting this food?
Janet Meger 8/22/2025 9:36 AMFruits and vegetables still need to be trimmed at times, but usually I don’t have to throw the entire item in my compost pail. I am trying to restrain from buying too much produce. I will still visit farmers’ markets for the rest of this season but try to limit buying anything at a grocery store to no more than once a week.-

REFLECTION QUESTIONStorageDid you find that you were storing things in a spot that wasn't a good fit? Which items have you changed?
Janet Meger 8/18/2025 9:19 AMI have changed some items that were formerly on door shelves to the interior of the fridge. I also periodically move produce from the back of shelves to the front so that I will not forget to use them.-
Christina Moran 8/18/2025 2:36 PMI have been keeping my oranges on the counter instead of the produce drawer in the fridge. Reminds me to grad a healthy snacky!

REFLECTION QUESTIONPlanningWhat have you found out since you started taking an inventory of your fridge before shopping?
Janet Meger 8/10/2025 6:24 PMI don’t buy as many perishable items as I have in the past. I try to combine more vegetables in salads and sautés than I used to.
