Planning
Create a Weekly Meal Plan
I will reduce food waste and save money by planning a weekly menu of meals and ingredients for my household of 2.
Planning
Plan to Use My Garden or CSA Produce
I will check to see what will be ready to eat in my garden or CSA box this week and plan recipes that use these ingredients.
Planning
Keep a Food Inventory
I will take a fridge and pantry inventory to stay up to date with what I have at home before I go grocery shopping.
Cooking
Swap This for That
If I am missing an ingredient for a recipe I will find a substitute I have on hand and use that instead.
Storage
Be Smart About Food Labels
I will learn about food labels and not throw food out just based on the date on the package, but instead check the smell and color to see if it has gone bad.
Planning
Plan a Leftovers Day
I will plan a meal to use up leftovers by creating a tasty smorgasbord or using a recipe that repurposes them.

REFLECTION QUESTIONPlanningAn average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Does this surprise you? Where would you rather use this money? How has meal planning helped you avoid waste?
Angela Skrade 8/22/2025 10:37 AMCreating a weekly meal plan helps me to make sure I use what I have on hand. It also helps me to be more efficient on busy week nights. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPlanningHow easy has it been for you to plan your garden or CSA produce into your meals? Do you ever let your seasonal food go to waste?
Angela Skrade 8/18/2025 10:17 AMI try to keep a list of everything I have available in the refrigerator and in the garden and look for recipes to include things on hand. Sometimes, I have lost seasonal produce, due to over buying, but I'm working hard to have this happen less.
