Glean and prepare, distribute or compost fruit from pear tree
My neighbor's pear tree is prolific this year and they don't know what to do with them. I'm in contact for people who like to use gleaned food, so I can distribute the pears among several folks and they can be eaten. Otherwise the entire lot would be taken to a yard waste site.
Cooking
Don't throw away that expensive drink that is awful
Longing for sugar, I bought a Dunkin 'Donuts iced coffee drink from a vending machine. It was awful tasting. Today I'm making a black tea, and using the leftovers that I don't want to drink alone, as extra flavor.

Sherilyn Young 8/29/2025 1:10 PMA quick meal for me is a sandwich and some finger food, whether fruit, veggies or chips. This is a nice no waste meal because I make and take just what I want, and not more. -

Sherilyn Young 8/28/2025 2:52 PMOn a bike/walk last night I noticed two apple trees by the side of the road. I'd love to glean from them, but they are very hard to reach (high and set back on a bluff). The trees are noticeable because the fruit falls on the sidewalk, but by that time it's not good to eat.-

Sherilyn Young 8/28/2025 2:46 PMLast night I threw away an entire English cucumber because it was moldy and mushy from sitting in my refrigerator too long, under other veggies.-
Jenny Kedward 8/29/2025 9:04 AMIt happens! Remember to not buy it next time if you don't have a plan to use it within 3-4 days. I've been there, too. -
Vivien Fowler 8/28/2025 3:48 PMI feel that happens to all of us at one time or another. That’s why the Stop Food Waste Challenge is so helpful -- it keeps us more mindful and involved in making small changes that add up.

Sherilyn Young 8/27/2025 12:28 PMOver the weekend I ordered nachos and wings at a restaurant. We couldn't eat is all in the time we had, so we took it all home, including wings, ranch dip, celery and nachos. I ate the nachos right away, but saved the rest: wings for tomorrow's lunch, ranch for dipping pea pods in. The olives were the only food scraps for composting. But, it all came home in a styrofoam container...-
Jenny Kedward 8/29/2025 9:12 AMThe food that would have been wasted would have a much bigger environmental impact than the styrofoam container. You did great! -
Emily Pollack 8/27/2025 9:38 PMI admire the people who remember to take containers with them when they go out! I always remember too late, often like when I just pop in somewhere to get some groceries and realize I don't have a bag with me!!

Sherilyn Young 8/25/2025 3:20 PMOn my goal of tracking wasted food (that went for compost) I got rid of some black olives (I do not like) and put some cut up onions, celery and carrots in the leftover brine from pickled, canned jalapenos. -
Sherilyn Young 8/25/2025 3:13 PMThe pears that my co-workers did not take was put on the steps of my house with a few bags to go and a free sign. Between the two times I had pears for giving away, I started with 260 lbs. I ended with about 150 lbs, that I will deal with myself at home. Will just make a puree to freeze and eat, unless I can find a pear syrup recipe that is doable. I've got a lot of work to do, and perhaps one more harvest. Meanwhile, down the block from the pears is a tree full of almost ripe apples...-
Jenny Kedward 8/29/2025 9:19 AMGreat job sharing with neighbors! Have you tried posting on your local Buy Nothing or Nextdoor group? That's popular in my neighborhood.

Sherilyn Young 8/20/2025 6:19 PMToday I brought approx. 2 1/2 5-gallon buckets as well as 1/2 paper grocery bag-full of fresh pears from my neighbor's tree into work to share. Otherwise, they would likely go to the compost site. The internet says that a 5-gallon bucket of pears weighs 100 lbs. so that's about 250 lbs. of fruit. If they are not all gone by Friday, when I will take them back home, then I'll try to give them to neighbors. More next time.-
Lindsey Countryman 8/21/2025 9:31 AMholy moly, that is a proliferation of pears!! If you have extra, that would make a delicious simple syrup for cocktails or mocktails! If you froze it, you'd be set for holiday gifts for everyone you know 😆 -

Sherilyn Young 8/18/2025 2:53 PMStill have a list on my refrigerator of how much food I've not used because it was spoiled. 1/2 head of romaine lettuce was mold and rotten at the top, while the bottom was fine. I ate two of the green pears gleaned from the tree and they were good. Most of the harvest remains. -
Sherilyn Young 8/15/2025 11:19 AMYesterday was a bummer. I had to throw part of a cucumber and mandarin in the compost. Aside from eating my fruits and veggies faster/earlier, I can change the type of produce I buy. Mandarins are not in season, their quality is not high, so I would buy them only in the winter. Also, I'd buy only the mini or English cukes because the common variety is so juicy, has a lot of seeds, and spoils faster.
