The salad has gotten to the point where some of it decaying. Nothing a good soak and cleaning won't help. Took the last of our salad and left over veggies combined the veggies to a soup base and placed the clean salad on the side to eat along with my soup. Saving remanences of veggies is wat we do best.

Managed to cook just enough for a group of 14 on a camping trip, no waste!

That is amazing! I find trips like that have some eating a ton more than normal and some eat nothing so amount are always way off! Way to go!!!

I persuaded my family to wash and eat up a whole bunch of almost-done strawberries instead of tossing them today. They tasted great.

Hello , I took all of the foods from my refrigerator and those items that were old I placed in our compost pile. Not much waste but it is still nice to have it going back into the earth by composting.

Family vacation is tricky for this challenge, not because we're wasting food, but because I'm not in charge.

Agree! For us -- during vacation, not having a checklist often leads to overbuying -- even if we’re trying to avoid waste.

My husband and I love to order entrees to share at restaurants. Did that today, no leftovers to take home!

It's tough with kids (nieces and nephews) who are rampant food-wasters, but it's nice that there's a dog to eat up what they leave on their plates!

Same! I try to let them serve themselves but sometimes that makes it worse.

I often seem to be visiting my parents' during the first week of this challenge; I'm always inspired by the ways my mother raised us all on avoiding food waste. She uses leftovers, rotates her fridge, keeps grocery lists. It's harder when there are big groups and grandkids, but it's nice to be around mindful people!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Planning
Are there food items you have been better about using up and not wasting since you started keeping an inventory of what's in your fridge?

    "What was I thinking!"

Working on this food inventory is showing me there are certain things I can't live without and there are some things I think I need and I don't use as much at as much as I thought... for example the large bag of diced celery has been waiting for use for some time now and since it's not soup, whether I realize my mistake of not separating it into smaller portions for stirfry when I put it in the freezer.

However, gently hammering to separate it should solve the problem!

Just getting started on the challenge and inviting/re-inviting team members! Right now my kitchen is kind of messy and that is detrimental to food prep and definitely makes me not want to focus in the kitchen, however, little by little, I'm getting organized and hoping that the food waste challenge will be an inspiration!
