Do you know if the restaurants you frequently visit offer smaller portions? Do you feel comfortable asking for them if not?

I have not asked for smaller portions, but I have asked for a to-go box right away. Then I put half my meal in the to-go box and have the rest the next day. I would be interested in if I still got charged the same amount for less food.

We often worry about running out of food so we make too much. What thoughts and feelings have come up when you make just the right amount to eat up all the food?

Whenever I purchase a lot of ingredients, they typically will go bad before I make the meals, especially fruit and veggies. Buying just what I need when I need it prevents food going to waste.

An average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Does this surprise you? Where would you rather use this money? How has meal planning helped you avoid waste?

We plan our meals now so that we will have enough for additional lunches or dinners which has led to less eating at restaurants and less food waste. We don't mind leftovers!

What have you found out since you started taking an inventory of your fridge before shopping?

I waste more produce than I would like to. Buying smaller portions or freezing it is something that I need to get better at.

Same here -- I’ve sent way too many veggies on a one-way trip to the compost 🙈🥕. Buying smaller portions (or giving your freezer a promotion to ‘food saver’) is definitely a game-changer. You’ve got this! 💪🌱

What kinds of foods do you like to eat as leftovers? If you or your household members don't like eating leftovers, are there any foods you would be more willing to try than others?

My preferred leftovers to eat would be sauce based foods like chili and spaghetti sauce. I'm not sure what foods I would be more willing to try as leftovers as we eat a lot of the same things most of the time.

Yes, the pounds and dollar amount of food wasted by the average American family is surprising. I would rather use this money to get a gym membership or take a vacation. Meal planning has helped me avoid waste by being more organized overall.

Besides having access to fresh herbs and vegetables, what benefits will you see from growing your own garden?

I started a little garden with tomatoes, onions, jalapenos, cilantro, and basil. By starting this garden I am more conscious of the conditions in which food grows. By selecting herbs and vegetables that are common in my weekly grocery haul- I am able to instead- go to the garden and pick off fresh tomatoes from the vine.

What food items do you prefer buying from a farmers market than a grocery store? Why?

I love buying staples at the farmer's market- fruits/vegetables, I feel the food has to go through fewer processes in order to get to my consumption.

How has your awareness of the food you waste changed since you started separating it from other trash? Did anything surprise you?

We now keep more uneaten veggies and bones/skin to make broth so we can have that for soups in the winter! I am really looking forward to that!
