Christy Aufderhar 8/27/2024 6:51 AMThe challenge has been helpful! I am no longer "stocking up" on fresh produce and I am just buying what I will need for 2-3 days max and then shopping again if I need to. I am also trying a lot of new things. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPlanning Learn About and Choose a Meal Plan StyleWhat meal plan method works for you and why? Have you tried some in the past that didn't work?
Christy Aufderhar 8/27/2024 6:49 AMOne thing that I like to do ahead of time is buy a huge family pack of hamburger and I fry it up and then bag it up in separate 2 lb freezer bags and freeze it. When I am in a hurry I can just throw the cooked hamburger in hot dishes and soups and the meals are done a lot quicker. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCooking Make Soup BrothHave you ever made soup broth from scratch before? What kinds of vegetables do you have on hand to put in?
Christy Aufderhar 8/27/2024 6:46 AMI had never made soup broth from scratch before, but I found it to be easy and a great way to save money by not having to buy broth in the store. I used veggie scraps or items that I only had a few left of (onions, celery, carrots) -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKids Try New FoodsWhat types of foods do you struggle to get your children to eat? Do you eat these foods yourself? What do you know about why they don't like them?
Christy Aufderhar 8/19/2024 6:31 AMTwo of my kids have always disliked lettuce and tomatoes. They always told me that they think lettuce is bland and flavorless and tomatoes were disgusting, but when I made BLT's recently they devoured them and went back for seconds! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPlanning Sign up for Fridge Check FridaysWhat have you found out since you started taking an inventory of your fridge before shopping?
Christy Aufderhar 8/19/2024 6:27 AMI buy too many cucumbers at once. I used to buy four, but a couple always get mushy before we can eat them. I am now going to only buy two cucumbers each week instead. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPlanning Track My Wasted FoodWhat did you find you are tossing the most? How can you change your habits to avoid wasting this food?
Christy Aufderhar 8/19/2024 6:22 AMI was throwing away more fruit than anything else.
I helped this problem by putting the fruit out where it is more visible to the kids and I hid the chips and other junk food! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKids Talk About Wasting FoodHow did your conversation go? What kinds of things did your children ask about or find important?
Christy Aufderhar 8/19/2024 6:11 AMMy kids eat bananas when they are a little green. They were told that when bananas turn black they are still ok to have in smoothies or use them to make banana bread. The kids were told that the over ripe bananas get put into freezer bags to use for the smoothies and banana bread for a later date. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKids Get Involved in the KitchenShare about a successful planning or cooking activity you have done as a family!
Christy Aufderhar 8/08/2024 9:29 AMAlthough it was not a healthy choice my two younger girls and I baked a cake together. I know it's crazy, but we have never done that before! It was a very fun bonding experience!-
H McCrillis 8/09/2024 12:58 AMOoh, which flavor? 🙂

REFLECTION QUESTIONCooking Reimagine LeftoversHow have you modified what you do with leftovers to make sure nothing goes to waste?
Christy Aufderhar 8/08/2024 9:27 AMThis week I had leftover baked chicken so I made some homemade chicken noodle soup. I also had the homemade vegetable broth that I prepared for the challenge as well. It was a hit and the kids went back for seconds.
