Nicole's actions

Shopping

Eat Before Shopping

I will resist impulse buys by eating a snack or meal before going grocery shopping. Those who grocery shop on an empty stomach spend 64% more than not-hungry shoppers.

DAILY ACTIONS

Planning

Sign up for Fridge Check Fridays

will sign up for Fridge Check Friday emails, sent by Hennepin County but open to everyone, to prompt me to check my fridge for food that needs to be used up and for hacks on storing food to keep it fresh.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Community

Get Social

I will share information about food waste and the actions that I am taking on social media.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Cooking

Revive Limp Produce

I will rescue limp produce like leafy greens or carrots by soaking them in cold water or using them in recipes where appearance doesn't matter.

COMPLETED 1
DAILY ACTION

Storage

Properly Store Herbs

I will store fresh herbs just like cut flowers in a jar with 1 to 2 inches of water and cover with a plastic bag to maintain moisture. For woody or hardy herbs like rosemary, thyme, sage and chives, I will arrange them lengthwise on a damp paper towel, rolled up, then sealed in a plastic bag and stored in the refrigerator. I will properly store 1 bunches of herbs.

DAILY ACTIONS

Cooking

Cook From Root to Leaf

I will try root-to-leaf recipes, which utilize all parts of the vegetable, such as beet greens, carrot tops, and herb stems.

Storage

Properly Store Berries

To keep berries fresh, place them on top of a paper towel in a sealed container to absorb excess moisture and reduce chances of molding. I will properly store 2 packs of berries.

The results with berry storage haven't been great. I am not sure they are lasting any longer than they did left unwashed in the original containers. However, I would be sure to yank out any that were getting moldy or soft when I first open the store packaging, and then try to eat the ripest ones first.

It actually isn't new for me to check, but doing it this thoroughly is. I used to just look to see if I still had an ingredient for a recipe, Now I am looking at everything that might need to be tossed and making plans to save most of them.

I got the peppers and broccoli I didn't eat to the freezer in time. Strawberries had to be trimmed a lot, i am not sure the new storage is helping much, but they got eaten. My main loss this week was a corn tortilla that had been hiding under other stuff and turned green.

Some very dry buns became bread crumbs today. OTOH, finally had to toss a bit of cilantro after 2 weeks in spite of storing it properly.
The week ahead will be interesting. SInce I got 20% off all produce today, I bought extra with plans to freeze.

It was a bit harder this week because I was out of town over the weekend. However, my cilantro is hanging in there with the proper storage technique. Knowing my "eat first" container has a decent amount of grapes in it kept me from buying too many more. I was even uppity enough to take just one bunch out of the producer's bag and leave the rest.

The handful of baby spinach that might have gone forgotten and slimy before made it into a yummy omelet.

I am already good at planning and cooking, but there are still occasional incidents of "science experiments" in my frig!
