Shopping
Eat Before Shopping
I will resist impulse buys by eating a snack or meal before going grocery shopping. Those who grocery shop on an empty stomach spend 64% more than not-hungry shoppers.
Storage
Be Smart About Food Labels
I will learn about food labels and not throw food out just based on the date on the package, but instead check the smell and color to see if it has gone bad.
Shopping
Stick to Your Grocery List
I will only purchase the items on my grocery list and avoid impulse purchases.
Kids
Try New Foods
I will have my children try new foods (including veggies!) to encourage them to not be picky eaters.
Kids
Talk About Wasting Food
I will have a discussion with my 4 children about the importance of not wasting food.
Community
Keep all food waste out of the garbage
In addition to using up my edible food, I will keep any extra scraps out of the trash by separating them for backyard composting, curbside pickup, or a drop-off program.
Cooking
Cook Just Enough
I will scale down the recipe of a meal to make just the right amount for my household of 5 so we eat everything up.
Shopping
Scrutinize Deals
I will resist the suggestion to buy the quantity advertised on sale and only buy what I know I will eat.

Randi Music 8/27/2024 9:24 AMMy grandsons showing off their garden produce and 2 new foods they are committed to trying! -
Randi Music 8/21/2024 6:05 AMI have been encouraging my grandkids to try new foods, All three are on the spectrum, so they are super sensory sensitive, textures are a big issue for them. Now that the garden is producing and they help to harvest..they are ALL about trying veggies without a debate! Not saying they would eat them twice, but at least more agreeable to trying! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONStorage Be Smart About Food LabelsDid you know that not all food labeling means the same thing? How have you changed your habits to decide if food is still safe to eat?
Randi Music 8/19/2024 7:15 AMI do not like throwing food away at all. I'm definitely a smeller! Also, if is smells unexpired, I check for any "growth" before using. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKids Talk About Wasting FoodHow did your conversation go? What kinds of things did your children ask about or find important?
Randi Music 8/14/2024 11:26 AMThe youngest had more questions towards why we should be concerned about food waste. The older kiddos were less engaged -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Keep all food waste out of the garbageHow has your awareness of the food you waste changed since you started separating it from other trash? Did anything surprise you?
Randi Music 8/14/2024 11:25 AMthere are a lot of beneficial items that go into the trash that I could've been adding to compost for my gardens -
REFLECTION QUESTIONShopping Stick to Your Grocery ListWhat are some of the things you typically buy that you weren't on your list? How do you think you might limit some of those purchases?
Randi Music 8/14/2024 11:24 AMSale items, for sure. Even if we don't typically buy said item. I am making changes by sticking to my grocery list, buying only what I need for the week. Shopping more frequently (which I do not like, but it does have a benefit) -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCooking Cook Just EnoughWe often worry about running out of food so we make too much. What thoughts and feelings have come up when you make just the right amount to eat up all the food?
Randi Music 8/14/2024 11:22 AMI am determined to cut out food waste (and save money) by being more mindful of making only enough for the meal that I am cooking for at the time. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKids Try New FoodsWhat types of foods do you struggle to get your children to eat? Do you eat these foods yourself? What do you know about why they don't like them?
Randi Music 8/14/2024 11:16 AMMy kiddos are sensory sensitive, so they often will not try something new, they stick with the tried and true. I have implemented offering rewards for trying something new. This seems to be working to at least get them to try something new. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONShopping Eat Before ShoppingWhat can you do to make sure you never shop hungry?
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONShopping Scrutinize DealsAre you someone who typically chooses what you buy based on what is on sale? How can you make sure you don't buy more than what you need?
Randi Music 8/01/2024 11:41 AMI have been making more of a conscious effort to buy what I need for a few days at a time. I do take advantage of sales, I am learning to curb the urge to buy what is on sale if it is not something we would typically eat.
