Planning
Keep a Food Inventory
I will take a fridge and pantry inventory to stay up to date with what I have at home before I go grocery shopping.
Cooking
Revive Limp Produce
I will rescue limp produce like leafy greens or carrots by soaking them in cold water or using them in recipes where appearance doesn't matter.
Planning
Sign up for Fridge Check Fridays
will sign up for Fridge Check Friday emails, sent by Hennepin County but open to everyone, to prompt me to check my fridge for food that needs to be used up and for hacks on storing food to keep it fresh.
Storage
Create an Eat First Area
I will create an "Eat First" area in my fridge to prioritize food that needs to be used right away for my household of 1.
Cooking
Taste Test Trial
When I try a new food or recipe, I will only make a small amount first to make sure my household likes it.
Planning
Learn About Portion Sizes
I will observe how much my family members eat and learn how many portions will match our life stages and appetites.
Planning
Track My Wasted Food
I will track the food that my household of 1 throws out so I can learn what we're wasting and why.

REFLECTION QUESTIONPlanning Keep a Food InventoryAre there food items you have been better about using up and not wasting since you started keeping an inventory of what's in your fridge?
Kristin Olson 8/23/2024 8:03 AMFresh vegetables and herbs tend to go bad quickly. I have worked diligently to make the best use of them to my abilities before they go bad. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCooking Taste Test TrialDid you find any recipes that your family loved and you want to make again? What were they?
Kristin Olson 8/23/2024 8:01 AMYes. I received some cucumbers from a family member's garden, and tried a new recipe for a savory Indian pancake style dish. I would make some tweaks to it next time I make it to suit my own tastes, but it was really delicious! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPlanning Track My Wasted FoodWhat did you find you are tossing the most? How can you change your habits to avoid wasting this food?
Kristin Olson 8/08/2024 10:23 AMFresh vegetables tend to get wasted the most often. I purchase them with the intent to prepare a specific meal, and then am too busy or otherwise exhausted to prepare the intended meal before the items spoil. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPlanning Sign up for Fridge Check FridaysWhat have you found out since you started taking an inventory of your fridge before shopping?
Kristin Olson 8/05/2024 10:06 AMI buy less, but especially buy less fresh food unless I plan to immediately eat or otherwise prepare it. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONStorage Create an Eat First AreaWhat kinds of food are on your Eat First shelf? Has creating an Eat First area helped you reduce food waste?
Kristin Olson 8/05/2024 10:05 AMUsually veggies or other foods that tend to have a shorter shelf life. Having a separate area for foods about to reach the end of their shelf life helps me be visually reminded of what I need to eat first. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPlanning Learn About Portion SizesHave you noticed any trends in the types of food that you don't make in the right amount?
Kristin Olson 8/05/2024 10:01 AMUnfamiliar/new recipes that produce leftovers tend to get left behind more often.
