REFLECTION QUESTIONStorage Learn About Food StorageDid you find that you were storing food incorrectly? Which items have you changed?
Crystal Turner 8/30/2024 12:13 PMI tend to store produce in not the best way. I know technically I should refrigerate tomatoes but it makes their texture change so I hate it so much. Also the crisper has been a mystery half the time but I've learned how to set it and use it correctly. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONStorage Create an Eat First AreaWhat kinds of food are on your Eat First shelf? Has creating an Eat First area helped you reduce food waste?
Crystal Turner 8/30/2024 12:12 PMA lot of vegetables and starches end up on the eat first because I just don't eat as much as I used to and I have to try to scale back on what I'm buying. I tend to buy based on what sounds good at the time and don't always circle back around to making the actual meal that sounded good in the store. But at least making the eat first area has helped rotate products out that are losing their best taste. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCooking Save the PeelsWhich citrus do you have the most of and what kind of cleaning product will you make?
Crystal Turner 8/30/2024 12:08 PMI rescued the lemon peels from lemonade I made and made a vinegar mix cleaner. Something to spray down the kitchen with when I'm cleaning. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONStorage Befriend My FreezerDo a bit of research about foods that freeze and revive well. What can you put in the freezer that you didn't know you could?
Crystal Turner 8/30/2024 12:07 PMI thought you had to can tomatoes which is admittedly the best way but you can actually also freeze them. Also freeze butter and cheese if need be. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONStorage Organize My RefrigeratorDid you find that you were storing things in a spot that wasn't a good fit? Which items have you changed?
Crystal Turner 8/30/2024 12:06 PMSome things were jammed to the back of the fridge that led to out of sight out of mind. I pulled those forward and up and looked at dates to see what needed to be eaten first. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCooking Use the Edible PortionHave you previously learned about what food is still safe to eat if a portion of it goes bad? Who taught you this information?
Crystal Turner 8/26/2024 2:42 PMI always thought that you could cut off mold and it would be OK to eat but not necessarily. I've seen videos of how mold spreads "roots" throughout the item (bread, fruits and vegetables, etc) and you don't always see it. It is better to try to avoid the mold in the first place. But just blemishes and other marks are ok to cut off and safe to eat. I have mostly learned this stuff on YouTube. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPlanning Plan to Use My Garden or CSA ProduceHow easy has it been for you to plan your garden or CSA produce into your meals? Do you ever let your seasonal food go to waste?
Crystal Turner 8/21/2024 9:38 AMUnfortunately I've had to let too much go to waste in the past. But I'm learning new methods by freezing and canning to preserve my harvest. -
