Cooking
Revive Limp Produce
I will rescue limp produce like leafy greens or carrots by soaking them in cold water or using them in recipes where appearance doesn't matter.
Shopping
Stick to Your Grocery List
I will only purchase the items on my grocery list and avoid impulse purchases.
Planning
Keep a Food Inventory
I will take a fridge and pantry inventory to stay up to date with what I have at home before I go grocery shopping.
Cooking
Swap This for That
If I am missing an ingredient for a recipe I will find a substitute I have on hand and use that instead.
Community
Watch a Documentary About Food
I will watch 1 videos or documentaries to learn about the scope and scale of food waste in this country.
Storage
Be Smart About Food Labels
I will learn about food labels and not throw food out just based on the date on the package, but instead check the smell and color to see if it has gone bad.
Planning
Sign up for Fridge Check Fridays
will sign up for Fridge Check Friday emails, sent by Hennepin County but open to everyone, to prompt me to check my fridge for food that needs to be used up and for hacks on storing food to keep it fresh.
Cooking
Cook Just Enough
I will scale down the recipe of a meal to make just the right amount for my household of 3 so we eat everything up.
Storage
Learn About Food Storage
I will learn about food storage and store food based on best practices to keep it from spoiling before it is used.

REFLECTION QUESTIONCooking Revive Limp ProduceWhat successes have you had in reviving limp produce? What can you do so that your produce doesn't go limp in the future?
Sharon Williams 8/19/2024 10:16 AMI wish my basil would last longer! I trimmed the stems and put a wet paper towel around the bottom in the fridge and it actually seemed to get a couple extra days. The I cut the limp basil into strips and put on a grilled cheese sandwich. Still tastes great! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCooking Swap This for ThatHow comfortable are you with making ingredient swaps? Where do you go to find substitutes if you don't have what you need?
Sharon Williams 8/15/2024 9:48 AMI am used to swapping because of my family's likes and dislikes, so getting creative with substitutes isn't hard for me. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCooking Cook Just EnoughWe often worry about running out of food so we make too much. What thoughts and feelings have come up when you make just the right amount to eat up all the food?
Sharon Williams 8/15/2024 9:46 AMToday was my trash day and I usually pull out things from the fridge that are past edible. Today I only had a very small container of leftovers and an almost completely used pack of dill that had gotten a little watery. Although the leftovers went in the bin, I put the dill in one of my patio plants to naturally compost. It was satisfying not to be tossing so much! -
Sharon Williams 8/14/2024 9:27 AMI printed the Food Inventory sheets which gave me another idea. My college-age son sometimes doesn't know what he can eat from the fridge and what is for a meal, so I can mark things on the sheets that are meant for him (or anyone.) Plus, since he loves smoothies, he will know what fruit should be used up and tossed in his blender. :) -
Sharon Williams 8/09/2024 8:18 AMI reduced the amount of pasta from 16 oz to 12 oz in one of our favorite pasta dishes that we usually have leftovers when I make. Those leftovers sometimes end up tossed. It ended up being the perfect amount. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPlanning Keep a Food InventoryAre there food items you have been better about using up and not wasting since you started keeping an inventory of what's in your fridge?
Sharon Williams 8/05/2024 11:33 AMI chopped up some leftover seasoned chicken breast and combined it with some kale, dried cranberries and an apple to make a great salad. -
Sharon Williams 8/01/2024 9:34 AMI'm just starting the challenge today, but am excited to learn and be more conscious of the food I take into my home.
