    Community Watch a Documentary About Food
    Have you ever thought about food going to waste on this scale before?

    It is so hard to imagine how much food goes into landfills everyday. One of the things that really sticks in my mind after watching "Wasted" is that it takes 25 years for a head of lettuce to decompose in a landfill. I think people really need to hear facts like this. It was very encouraging to hear about how other countries like South Korea are dealing with food waste and the stories about the gardens in the schools.

      Indeed. I never knew how long decomposition took in landfills. Thinks about all the carbon dioxide emitted. 😢

    It’s hard to believe today is the last day of a challenge. It went really quickly! It’s also the last day of my current apartment complex, where I’ve been for two years, a little bit, bittersweet leaving, however, in the context of food waste challenge. It was sort of satisfying that when I emptied my freezer, I was able to give my neighbor blueberries and a pastry pie crust, knowing that she loves baking and would make good use of it.

    and what I brought with me was some pulverized greens to make smoothies, frozen, homemade soup, homemade pasta sauce, chopped onions, and I felt really successful in my personal endeavors in this challenge.

    However, the biggest success was looking at the ACW climate action team with seven members coming in at number five in the teams and Margo also coming in in the top five at least at this point in a day bravo to everyone who participated I think we did a great job built Community And had fun engaging with some new folks. Online was a lot of fun!

    My fridge is all of a sudden almost bare, just in time for my "national holiday tradition" of cleaning either the fridge, the shower, or both. Time to apply what was learned/observed this month. I had fallen out of the habit of reading labels for high fructose corn syrup - don't buy. I will go back to that, plus look at expiration dates and only buy if it's close, not already a couple years past, and not be as adventurous with what I think I should try. That should keep my backstock more reasonable, which saves space and unclutters the brain. I've started filling excess pantry space with non-pantry items so I'm not tempted to buy just to fill space. I'll try to pay more attention to where and how I can get smaller quantities of fresh produce. When you'd like to share a CSA box or farmers market excess with other like-minded folks but you don't live or work close by, intentions are good but execution impractical. And finally, congratulations to the ACW Climate Action Team - our small number but mighty prolific participants are among the top in the challenge. Thank you for taking it seriously, and we can reflect off-line what it means for the group.

    This has been a fun challenge. Next year, I want to grow more of my own produce, especially green beans, tomatoes, and carrots.

    Someone reminded me of the back-to-school BBQ that is held at the Culinary Wellness Center on Plymouth Ave., it's September 18 from 4-7. It's great to see how the Minneapolis school district is changing over from the soul-less prepacks of previous decades, and making it fun for students to embrace healthy and cross-cultural eating. Unfortunately, a lot of schools were built without kitchens during that era. I want to believe schools are teaching not only healthy eating and food preparation, but the stop food waste principles covered in this challenge AND the perils of plastic from February's challenge. I'm guessing it's also hard to hit all three in the institutional setting with tight time constraints.
    In case I don't get to check in on the last day of the challenge, I want to say it's been fun exchanging notes with the most active of our team members. We took the routine seriously and were able to keep in touch and learn something about each other even as our life circumstances were changing and we had other work to do together or apart.

    Planning Track My Wasted Food
    What did you find you are tossing the most? How can you change your habits to avoid wasting this food?

    So far I've hardly thrown out anything but I know the thing that gets thrown out the most for me is salsa. I hardly ever buy it because I can't eat a whole jar myself before it goes bad. Other things that have been thrown out in my household are because it gets left at the studio and mixed up with our employees food so my husband doesn't know it is his. We need to figure out away to identify our own food better- maybe stickers on our containers would help.

      Salsa, goat cheese, and dill on over-easy eggs on whole wheat toast is a go-to breakfast in our house. Highly recommend, especially if you have salsa to use up. :)

      The idea of stickers has promise. For all the fun we had with making the "eat first" shelf labels, for me they got in the way. My fridge is small compared to most, and the shelves are such that things of varying heights have to be put in different places. Good reminder to hunt for the "expiring" foods, though. About salsa, over the years as a single I've found it's best to save certain foods for occasions where I'm going to a party and other folks will help me eat them up.

    Planning Create a Household Cookbook
    Was it hard or easy to create a list of recipes that everyone in your household will eat? How did it work best for you to organize them?

    I save recipes in a folder on my computer. A new thing I do when I find a recipe online but don't want to scroll through the exhaustive paragraphs about their family life and childhood memories is hit Print. It collapses the recipe into a single page of the necessary information. :)

    Pulled another day at the fair, and learned that MPCA (Minnesota Pollution Control Agency) is interviewing vendors there relating to all kinds of waste. Only got a quick introduction but would like to know more - and the results. I assume there's a lot of consumer waste with people buying food they then decide they can't eat all of...I like the idea of traveling in packs, ordering just one of anything and letting everyone try a bite. Don't know if anyone does that. I was working at the newspaper museum, saw someone's Sweet Martha's Cookies (the smallest bucket) and said "ooh, I need one of those." They opened up the tin and said "take what you like" - they apparently had eaten their fill trying to get the lid on.

    Missed checking in to the Challenge yesterday due to being at the fair and exhausted when I got home (never did get the hang of checking in via phone). Again, ate fair food judiciously - tried the pickle pizza (it's good) and a Kiwanis malt (apparently simple natural ingredients - not overly sugary, and my companion pointed out, it doesn't break down into foam). Haven't had time or inclination to grocery shop, so I'm learning to re-interpret breakfast. So what if it's yesterday's lunch sandwich leftover, it's nutrition.

      Yes! I have done that- traveling in a pack and sharing everything we buy. It's especially good for cheese curds- I find I only need about two a year.
      Looking forward to my annual Kiwanis malt though!

    Planning Plan a Leftovers Day
    What kinds of foods do you like to eat as leftovers? If you or your household members don't like eating leftovers, are there any foods you would be more willing to try than others?

    I would say I don't have a problem with eating things I make, or restaurant foods as leftovers. However, my favorite left over is burrito bowls. We never have any meat left, but the cilantro/lime rice and roasted vegies make a great actual burrito for lunch the next day.

    Shopping Glean or Forage
    Did you know what "gleaning" was before you joined this challenge? Have you noticed any fruits trees or berry patches in your neighborhood that produce more than is being used up?

    I've noticed a lot of mulberry trees near me, and eaten some of those. I've also found Chicken of the Woods. But I don't trust my knowledge with most mushrooms and berries I see, so I don't end up foraging much! For gleaning, I have discovered an app called Too Good to Go, which sells leftover food from restaurants at a discount...though I'm a little unsure whether it's really leftover or simply another sales outlet for some? If you use it, I recommend having enough people to feed that the larger quantities don't go to waste.

      Margo, Too Good to Go is pretty sparse near me as well. Intown Sushi always has something, which is part of what makes me think it's not a leftovers thing so much as a regular sales outlet...which isn't necessarily bad, but ambiguous.

      Do you find the Too Good to Go has enough restaurants in your area to make it worth looking at? I put it on my phone, then found that there is hardly anything in my neighborhood (which is rich with restaurants) and I suspect what you said, it's just another sales outlet. Wonder if it is working for those select few. I'm guessing the other restaurants have found charities to supply, and/or they've gotten good at figuring out how not to waste.
