How has your awareness of the food you waste changed since you started separating it from other trash? Did anything surprise you?

My trash can is lighter and less full, for sure. Less waste!

What have you found out since you started taking an inventory of your fridge before shopping?

I don't always need what I think I might need. I often substitute Greek yogurt for sour cream and therefore don't purchase it because we never finish it - it's really not that nutritious, mostly fat. Mentioned elsewhere that I found my lemon juice had expired and was truly bad - some extra particulate that I wasn't sure of. It still smelled ok so I have been having fun using it for cleaning and laundry. Also found outdated tomato paste cans x3. Felt quite bad about that, but they were bulging. Lesson is to not buy tomato paste at Costco since I don't use it up fast enough. I have just discovered my avocados are on the edge of becoming too ripe, so will freeze and use in smoothies. Perhaps buy avocados elsewhere so I don't purchase to many to eat in time. Or make my own guacamole and not purchase that. Tis the season, after all.

I think the best day for me to take stock of the what's in the fridge is the day before I go shopping for the weekend. Usually, I know what I have, and I don't have, but if I took a few more minutes and re-organized by fridge, using up older food would be easier.l

Made sure to refrigerate apples after a couple of days post purchase. Lots of garden produce right now. I found the articles on storage helpful, regarding where, when, clean or not, ways to store what, etc. Appreciated the suggestion of preserving peppers while green for better outcome. Made 3 quarts and 4 pints of cucumber pickles last week. Plan to dry habenero peppers soon. May freeze some also. Probably will pickle banana peppers, but chop and freeze bell peppers.

I find that eating before shopping is helpful. Another action that helps me is shopping less and buying for a longer period of time. I have to think ahead more that way. I see some good challenges on the dash board now. Our Teams points have gone up more than 100 since I posted last week. Yeah everyone!!

Have you noticed any trends in the types of food that you don't make in the right amount?

Always interesting to learn more about portion sizes. When I overindulge, it is usually on vegetables, which at least adds fewer calories. This will be a helpful reminder to my husband. It is easy to eat way more cheese than optimal on our cracker and cheese (and some fish) night. This is also a "movie night" which also leads to more eating than needed by portion. That is something we need to work on, if only for health reasons.

What meal plan method works for you and why? Have you tried some in the past that didn't work?

I have a few themed night plans: Taco Wednesdays because we have a regular commitment that night, Pizza Fridays including the kids and grandkids, Cheese & Cracker night (with cut up fresh veggies, plus pickled herring, salmon or sardines). Otherwise I cook a maindish 1-3 times a week and freeze leftovers for a couple more meals. Planning meals for a week at a time doesn't work well for me. Food contents in the fridge, freezer or pantry guide my choices of what to cook - as well as what is ripening in the garden.

Do you have days when you don't have time to spend making food? How has meal prep helped one those days?

Made a large kale salad, adding chickpeas and pumpkin seeds to increase protein. It made enough to share at National Night Out, a family dinner and a small group potluck.

    Shopping
What are some of the things you typically buy that you weren't on your list? How do you think you might limit some of those purchases?

Sent my husband to the store with a list. He was trying to be quick so I knew he would stick to the list. He is better at that than I am.

I admire his restraint. I use lists, but still tend to dawdle. 😕

Are you more likely to "hide the vegetable" in a dish or make it shine as the main ingredient? Why?

Saved chard leaves and stems I removed because threatening to go to see. Washed, chopped and froze for soup later.

Do a bit of research about foods that freeze and revive well. What can you put in the freezer that you didn't know you could?

Cooked fresh corn, cut it off the cob and froze the kernels.
